DOCKLAND MEMORY IN ROTHERHITHE／ロザハイス　波止場の記憶

I have researched and photographed Rotherhithe area since this April. This is one of the outcome of the project. The movie will be posted soon as well.

This project aims to explore the dockland hidden history in Rotherhithe. Especially, it focuses on the representativeness of the economic activity and resident’s life. Rotherhithe, the South East London, was the old commercial dock area from 17C.

One old picture of the cafe where I often visit inspired me to explore Rotherhithe.  The café was called Watch House cafe. It was used as the watch house to observe for preventing body snatchers from digging a grave. Before knowing the fact, the café was just a unique building café for me.  The place, however,  more attracted me when I saw one archive picture in the local library. This book is the output of my research and fieldwork from April to July in 2013.

4月からロザハイス地区について調べて、撮影を続けてきました。その結果の一部を一冊にまとめみました。後日、動画も公開予定。

このプロジェクトは、南東ロンドンのロザハイスの港町としての遺産を探索し収めたものです。中でも、17 世紀から1970年代まで栄えた港町の経済活動や住民の生活の名残に着目しています。

プロジェクトをはじめたきっかけは、よくいくカフェを写した一枚の古い写真でした。何も知らずにコーヒーを飲んでいたそのカフェは、1811年頃多発した墓荒しから墓地を守るために自警団が詰めていた監視小屋だったのです。当時、波止場で働く貧しい人々が医学解剖用に墓から死体を盗んで売っていたそうです。その事実に驚くとともに、この地域の歴史を調べはじめたのがはじまりでした。調べ、歩き始めると興味深い発見がたくさんありました。本書は、2013年4〜7月の調査・撮影の記録です。
