The Spring semester finished at the middle of March.

The new course assignment always pushed me to break my mental block to photograph a stranger. I could enjoy to talk with a stranger through a photography. Before the course starting, I seldom asked people to take their picture in both a daily life and travel.  In that sense, my communication skill was improved through the course work.

It was impossible to learn this kind of skill without many practical assignments. Every week, the deadline was so tight that I could not hesitate to negotiate and photograph. Moreover, I realised a research about my model was most important thing. I think it is very similar with a process of interview.

I was satisfied with the spring term activity. The summer term should be more than the spring!

3月20日に春学期が終わりました。

1月から約2ヶ月半という一見短く見える期間でしたが、毎週締め切りまで走り続けた気がしています。いろいろレビューすることはありそうですが、一番の収穫は、知らない人のポートレイトを撮ることが割りと自然にできるようになったということです。以前は、声かけて写真取らせてもらうなんてことは滅多にありませんでした。そういう意味では、春学期に得た写真を通してのコミュニケーション力の向上は大きな進歩といえます。

こういうのは、座学では絶対学べない。躊躇していては間に合わない課題をこなすために撮りたい人を探して、お願いして、撮影して編集してというプロセスが効果的だったようです。ただ、インタビューと同じで行き当たりばったりとしっかり対象をリサーチしての撮影は意味も成果も異なることも知りました。

その意味で言えば、この写真たちは旅人の視点ですれ違った人々をおさめたものです。深みを得るには、その被写体のことを出来る限り知る必要があります。

春学期を終えて思う修士のドキュメンタリー写真コースの強みは、まず与えられた課題を決められた期間で自分の快適空間から踏み出して撮るということを身をもって覚えさせるという点だと認識しました。非常に実践向きの良いコースです。さて、夏学期はどうなるでしょうか。
